  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 cup French fried onions

Instructions

  1. Cook macaroni according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  3. In a saucepan, whisk together flour and milk, cooking over medium heat until thickened.
  4. Add cheese to the milk mixture and stir until melted and smooth.
  5. Combine macaroni, cheese sauce, and caramelized onions in a large baking dish.
  6. Top with French fried onions and bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes until bubbly.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add cooked bacon bits.
  • Can substitute cheeses for a different taste.
